What connects the world premiere of a movie, a whale skeleton, and some of the best new scholarship about the biblical doctrine of Creation?
As one of the newest organizations exhibiting at this General Conference (GC) Session, the Faith and Science Council (FSC) is celebrating the close link between Creation and redemption. The exhibit (booth A502 of the exhibit hall) aims to demonstrate that the relationship between the natural sciences and the Bible’s account of creation can be complementary.
Session attendees who visit the booth will find Geological Research Institute scientists available to the public for answering questions concerning biology, geology, paleontology, and biblical Creation.
“What we’re hoping to communicate is the everlasting gospel of Revelation 14:6-7—that we are to worship our Creator and our Redeemer,” say Dr. Timothy Standish of the Geoscience Research Institute.
The exhibit features a variety of fossils for exhibition patrons to examine. Attendees can visit the booth to discover the “Fossil of the Day” as well as see the skeleton of a beluga whale.
“We tried to pull together a collection of fossils that illustrates various aspects of the fossil record and design in nature,” says Standish.
The FSC exhibit is also distributing free tickets to the world premiere of Living Waters: Intelligent Design in the Oceans of the World on July 10 in San Antonio. The documentary, produced by Illustra Media, features breathtaking cinematography and examines evidences of a Creator from ocean life.
“This is the latest from Illustra Media. Anyone who has seen their films knows that this is fabulous stuff!” says Standish.
The premiere of Living Waters is expected to attract a large number of evangelical Christians from the greater San Antonio area in addition to the Adventists attending GC Session, reports Standish. “This is a wonderful way we all can join together as Christians and celebrate our belief in the biblical Creation and enjoy one another’s company.”
Tickets for Living Waters are in limited quantity, and FSC representatives say they will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.
In addition to the world premiere of Living Waters, FSC is also sponsoring a series of media presentations on Creation during the General Conference Session called “Yes, Creation!” There will be presentations in English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French, and a schedule can be found at the FSC booth in the exhibit hall.
“This is an opportunity for us to roll out some of the fabulous media that has been produced in association with the Faith and Science Council,” says Standish.
Attendees of the GC Session can also purchase a new book on Creation in the Old Testament co-produced by the Faith and Science Council in cooperation with the Biblical Research Institute and the Geoscience Research Institute. He Spoke and It Was: Divine Creation in the Old Testament, edited by Adventist Review associate editor Gerald Klingbeil, is the first book in a new Creation series produced by this partnership.
He Spoke and It Was can be purchased through the Adventist Book Center. A more comprehensive, scholarly version, The Genesis Account and Its Reverberations in the Old Testament, can be purchased through Andrews University Press. The second volume of the Creation Series will deal with Creation in the New Testament and is expected to be released some time next year.
The Faith and Science Council was created by the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists to study the interrelationships of science and Scripture, with particular attention to Creation. The council’s membership comprises scientists, theologians, educators, pastors, and church administrators.
