Camp Meeting Memories
.Many years ago when my nephew was a little boy about 4 years of age, he was at the Grand Ledge, Michigan, camp meeting with his parents. One evening after dropping him off at the children’s meeting and then proceeding to the main meeting for the adults, they were surprised to see him come into the adult meeting and quickly sit down very close to his mother. He seemed to be a little frightened. He quietly said to his mother, “Some little kid just broke a window.”
My sister, his mom, asked him, “Was that little kid you?” and he admitted that yes, it had been him. We had some chuckles over that.

CAKE INSTEAD OF PIE: It all started in early December 2011, while perusing the December edition of Southern Living magazine. The recipe for chocolate gingerbread toffee cake caught my attention. Maybe I should make a cake for Christmas this year, I mused. But no, I always make pies, and a cranberry one would be a nice option along with a traditional pecan. I hesitated—and decided to tear out the recipe to keep my options open.
Every time I thought about Christmas dessert, my mind returned to that cake recipe. When it came time to go to the grocery story, the cake recipe went along, and the ingredients were purchased.
Late Friday afternoon, before Christmas on Sunday, as we were driving home from the aquarium our 4-year-old grandson said, “We should bake a cake for Jesus’ birthday.”
Tears came to my eyes when I realized the reason we were having cake for Christmas. As we sang “Happy Birthday” to Jesus on Christmas Day the whole family was reminded of the reason for the season.
