A 7-year-old boy and his family who live in Germany were visiting our church recently. It was time for the church service to begin when the boy whispered something to his mother that made me smile: “Mommy, may I go sit with Mrs. Witter? She’s my favorite church lady.”

Camp Meeting Memories
When I was a young girl, about 6 or 7, we lived in Bellflower, California. We went to the Lynwood camp meeting, which was held on the Lynwood Academy grounds. This one particular year at the night meetings the young children were told to come up and sit down in front of the stage, for there was a special person who was going to tell us a story. We all went up excited to hear a story when a big man came up on the stage. He was barefoot with a colored skirt on and big, bushy hair. He had a big spear with him.
We all looked on with wide eyes when he picked up that long spear he had beside him and brought it down with a loud bang. We kids all screamed. Some ran back to their parents; the rest of us just waited for the story. His name was Kata Rangoso, and I will never forget him.

One of my profound memories goes back to camp meeting in Hope, British Columbia, around 1975, when Elder J. L. Tucker of The Quiet Hour (grandfather of The Quiet Hour’s current president, Bill Tucker) was the main speaker.
I don’t recall his subject of that week. However, what struck me each evening then, and has remained with me all these 35-plus years later, is a statement he emphasized and kept reemphasizing. It was this: “Cultivate the awareness of God’s presence in your life.”
This must have impressed me instantly as God’s voice to us, as I’ve carried that precious thought with me all my life and in practicing it, my Christian walk has been enriched. God’s presence is ever with us, but it’s our conscious awareness of it, affirming it with thankfulness, that sustains us, every step of the way, amid the storm of life.
