“Mickey” Hutchinson gave a colorful children’s story to accompany his sermon on March 12, 2011.  He had the congregation in stitches about some of his escapades while the Seventh-day Adventist church in Claremont, New Hampshire, was being built in the 1950s. To conclude his story, he told us that it was during that time that he learned to balance a broom on his finger and that the secret of balancing a broom is the same as the secret of our Christian life: “Keep your eyes on the top.” So let’s keep our eyes on the Lord!

On a recent visit to a church in Annapolis, Maryland, I was asked to play piano for beginners’ Sabbath school. In a given moment the teacher passed around small squares of banana bread, giving the children the option of having it with or without butter.

 

When she came to Brandon, the choice entailed a discussion of who liked butter on what and what he liked with butter. Finally he decided to have butter on his, and the teacher commented, “I guess you just like butter on general principles.” There was a long pause, then Brandon spoke thoughtfully: “I’ve never HAD general principles!”
