Give & Take

2011 1507 page13Adventist Life
The other day a 96-year-old woman in a wheelchair and her daughter came to visit us.

They planned to stay for only a short time, but we encouraged them to sup with us.

Joyfully they agreed, and we all sat and enjoyed the meal together. Then we decided to show them a DVD of the Fountainview Academy Strings and Choir, Steps to Christ in Song, available on the Internet. It was as if Jesus was there with us!

Suddenly the deaf elderly woman exclaimed, “I know those students love Jesus. I can see it in their faces!” Even though she couldn’t hear, she saw! Praise God for all His blessings and for those dedicated young people!

“ ‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,’ declares the Lord. ‘As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.’ ”

Camp Meeting Memories
WHAT A REUNION! In the l940s the Greater New York Conference did not have its own campground. Therefore, New Yorkers could choose which nearby camp meeting they would attend. Our family chose to go to the Wescosville, Pennsylvania, camp meeting near Allentown. We would spend many of our summer vacations attending this camp meeting.

One year my dad and mother were walking on the grounds when a vaguely familiar-looking man passed my dad. They both stopped, exchanged greetings, and discovered that they really did know each other. In 1915 and in Schwenningen, Germany, both men were seatmates in the elementary school. After graduation they went their separate ways and never saw each other again until that day at camp meeting. By then both men were close to 40 years of age, and it’s amazing that they would even recognize each other!

However, what was more amazing still is that neither one had been a Seventh-day Adventist in Germany, both had emigrated to the United States, and both found the church in their new country! Robert Schlenker and his family lived in the Philadelphia area, and our family, the Karl Haller family, lived in Brooklyn, New York. After that providential meeting the men became fast friends. Their friendship lasted until Robert died in his 80s. God leads in mysterious ways!
