ADVENTIST LIFE
In 1915 my mother was a student nurse at the Battle Creek Sanitarium in Michigan. She often mentioned how she would pass Doctor John Harvey Kellogg in the halls.
The day Ellen G. White was laid to rest Mom asked permission to leave the sanitarium to walk across the street and see her for the last time. The funeral was set for 3:00 p.m. in the Dime Tabernacle—seating more than 3,300! Smaller churches in the area were thus free to have their own worship service at the traditional 11 o’clock hour and still make the funeral. I picture Mother in her spotless nurse’s uniform—taking the few quick steps to the church. Inside, she stands for a few moments looking down at the face of the woman who did so much to inspire the Seventh-day Adventist Church and its ministries. Mother said, “When I heard her preach in 1909, Ellen White said, ‘I see persons here I’ve seen in vision.’” Mother hoped her face had been among them. Then she added, “I couldn’t take my eyes off her!”
