Christian Sacrifice

“Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline, Communion without confession, absolution without personal confession. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ.”—Dietrich Bonhoeffer

“Avarice, greed, concupiscence and so forth are all based on the mathematical truism that the more you get, the more you have. The remark of Jesus that it is more blessed to give than to receive is based on the human truth that the more you give away in love, the more you are. It is not just for the sake of other people that Jesus tells us to give rather than get, but for our own sakes too.”—Frederick Buechner

“If the ultimate, the hardest, cannot be asked of me; if my fellows hesitate to ask it and turn to someone else, then I know nothing of Calvary love.”—Amy Carmichael

“He is no fool who gives up what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.”—Jim Elliot

“If a commission by an earthly king is considered a honour, how can a commission by a Heavenly King be considered a sacrifice?”—David Livingstone

“Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.”—the apostle Paul (Eph. 5:1, 2)

“We talk of the Second Coming; half the world has never heard of the first.”—Oswald J. Smith

“Some wish to live within the sound of a chapel bell; I wish to run a rescue mission within a yard of hell.”—C. T. Studd

“The Christian faith is meant to be lived moment by moment. It isn’t some broad, general outline—it’s a long walk with a real Person. Details count: passing thoughts, small sacrifices, a few encouraging words, little acts of kindness, brief victories over nagging sins.”—Joni Eareckson Tada

“I have found the paradox that if I love until it hurts, then there is no hurt, but only more love.”—Mother Teresa

“Self-preservation is the first law of nature, but self-sacrifice is the highest rule of grace.”—Unknown

“Christ is seeking to reproduce Himself in the hearts of men [and women]; and He does this through those who believe in Him. The object of the Christian life is fruit bearing—the reproduction of Christ’s character in the believer, that it may be reproduced in others.”—Ellen G. White (Christ’s Object Lessons, p. 67)
