A spiritual discipline is, when practiced faithfully and regularly, a habit or regular pattern in your life that repeatedly brings you back to God and opens you up to what God is saying to you.--www.spirithome.com.
Disciplines and practices are tools that are a part of cooperating with the Spirit on the task of remaking us into what God wants us to be.--www.spirithome.com.
They profess to be followers of Christ, but they do not know Him by an experimental knowledge. . . . They do not seek to be Christians in the same way in which they would learn a trade. . . . They do not realize that in order to be a savor of life unto life they must be under spiritual discipline and training, learning in the school of Christ.--Ellen G. White, Fundamentals of Christian Education, p. 255.
Faith for my deliverance is not faith in God. Faith means, whether I am visibly delivered or not, I will stick to my belief that God is love. There are some things only learned in a fiery furnace.--Oswald Chambers in Run Todays Race.
The Christian way is different: harder, and easier. Christ says, Give me All. I dont want so much of your time and so much of your money and so much of your work: I want You. I have not come to torment your natural self, but to kill it. No half-measures are any good.--C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity, p. 167.
The Bible recognizes no faith that does not lead to obedience, nor does it recognize any obedience that does not spring from faith. The two are opposite sides of the same coin.--A. W. Tozer.
Superficiality is the curse of our age. . . . The desperate need today is not for a greater number of intelligent people, or gifted people, but for deep people.--Richard Foster, Celebration of Discipline.
In the 1880s a young man who was an earnest Christian found employment in a pawnshop. Although he disliked the work, he did it faithfully as unto the Lord until a more desirable opportunity opened for him. To prepare himself for a life of Christian service, he wrote on a scrap of paper the following resolutions: I do promise God that I will rise early every morning to have a few minutes--not less than five--in private prayer. I will endeavor to conduct myself as a humble, meek, and zealous follower of Jesus, and by serious witness and warning I will try to lead others to think of the needs of their mortal souls. I hereby vow to read no less than four chapters in Gods Word every day. I will cultivate a spirit of self-denial and will yield myself a prisoner of love to the Redeemer of the world. That young man was William Booth, who later led thousands to Christ and founded the Salvation Army.--Source Unknown.
The Greeks had a race in their Olympic games that was unique. The winner was not the runner who finished first. It was the runner who finished with his torch still lit. I want to run all the way with the flame of my torch still lit for Him.--J. Stowell, Fan the Flame, p. 32.
Though we all have to enter upon discipleship alone, we do not remain alone. If we take Him at His word and are to become individuals, our reward is the fellowship of the church.--Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship, p. 113.
